This is a really great presentation from a true MySQL pro (thanks Jay). It is a must for anyone interested in MySQL Performance.Most of it still holds true, although it is 3 years now. A few things have happened, though, for example a number of new tools exist to make it easier discovering bad queries in your database - e.g. Jet Profiler for MySQL or Enterprise Monitor.To stay updated with more performance stuff, do check out "MySQL Performance blog" and "Planet MySQL".MySQL rocks.

i love the fact that the top three categories of performance issues are all related to the SQL code (DML & DDL) which is used to build and query the database; this has always been my experience; if properly programmed, even an unscalable server (MsAccess, SQLite, dBase, ...) can be pushed to its theoretical limit of performance; if poorly programmed, even a scalable server (Oracle, MsSqlServer, Sybase, ...) can bog down and become unresponsive;
